Day 31 — To expand or not to expand

This afternoon Governor Herbert revealed his proposal for an alternative to Medicaid expansion, a Utah model which includes using federal funds to enroll individuals up to 138% of the federal poverty line (around 110,000 people) in the private insurance market.  This 3 year pilot program includes requirements for cost sharing amount of coverage depends on four factors:

  • Ability to work
  • Household income
  • Access to employer or family health insurance
  • Individual health care needs

While the details are still be worked out and revealed, I am optimistic that Utah citizens may have a proposal on the table that addresses the needs of the “least among us” and allows us to meet those needs in a fiscally responsible, Utah way.
